The Bottle SPF Assumes a Coat You Rarely Put On

Lab SPF is scored at 2 mg per square centimetre. Typical use is often 0.5–1.5 mg, so the number on the bottle is not the protection on the skin.

The bottle says 30. You put some on. That feels like the same number.

It is not. SPF is scored on a thick, even film: 2 milligrams per square centimetre. A pea on the cheek, a spray that drifts, a swipe that vanishes into dry skin—that is a thinner film. The digit on the label does not shrink to match. The protection does.

Two milligrams is the test

FDA’s method in 21 CFR 201.327 is blunt: apply the product and the SPF standard at 2 mg/cm², then spread it with a finger cot. That coat is how a 30 becomes a 30. Miss it, and you are not wearing the rating you bought.

In household units the coat is large:

  • FDA and the AAD: at least one ounce—about a shot glass—to cover an average adult from head to toe. Face: AAD wants at least one teaspoon.
  • Cancer Council Australia: about 35 mL, or seven teaspoons, for a full-body adult coat—one teaspoon each for the arms, legs, front, back, and face/neck/ears.

One ounce is about 30 mL. Seven teaspoons is 35 mL. Same order. Neither is a dab.

Typical skin is a thinner film

People do not apply 2 mg/cm². Taylor and Diffey, writing in the BMJ, put everyday use at about 0.5 to 1.5 mg/cm². At those rates, they say, you may get perhaps one third of the labelled SPF.

Cancer Council’s policy band is wider. Most people apply far less than the test coat, and users often achieve an SPF 50–80% below the label. On a bottle of 30, that is a skin number on the order of 6 to 15, not 30. Australia’s TGA, summarising local measurements, puts average thickness around 0.5–0.99 mg/cm²—roughly a quarter to a half of the lab film.

Kim and colleagues measured high-SPF products at 2.0, 1.0, and 0.5 mg/cm². Protection fell as the film thinned, on a logarithmic curve—not a simple “half the cream, half the SPF.” Their volunteers’ usual coat sat near 1 mg/cm². A prompted double application got them close to 2.

So a thin coat of 30 is not 15 by arithmetic, and it is not 30 by hope. Plan for a much smaller factor unless the volume was real.

The trap is reading the bottle as the skin

Three everyday misses:

  1. “I put some on.” Some is not 2 mg/cm². A sheen you cannot see or feel is the usual under-dose.
  2. “The calculator gave me two hours.” Our SPF calculator multiplies unprotected minutes by the label SPF. Thin film breaks that multiplication. Treat the protected time as an upper bound—the tool already says so—not a permit. Hours at UV 4 can outdose minutes at UV 8 is the dose math. This is why the sunscreen half of that math is optimistic.
  3. “I sprayed it.” Cancer Council advises against aerosol sunscreens: at about 20 kph of wind, a 2021 measurement lost 28–93% of the product before it reached skin. Hitting the labelled SPF could mean spraying up to about 250 seconds per limb. That is still a thickness problem. Lotion you can see is easier to count.

Put on the test coat, then use the index

Use the live UV index for the rate. Then make the film thick enough that the bottle number is even in the conversation:

  1. Check today’s peak. WHO’s line is still 3 and above. A High peak with a pea of 50 is a thin-film day, not a 50 day.
  2. Measure volume, not vibe. Shot glass or seven teaspoons if most of you is bare. At least a teaspoon for the face. Cancer Council’s 35 mL means a 100 mL tube is about three full-body coats. If it lasts a month of beach afternoons, the film was thin.
  3. A second coat is often the first real one. Kim’s double application is how people actually reached ~2 mg/cm². It is not a way to stack 30 into 60.
  4. Do not spend the calculator’s minutes. Clothing and shade first. Sunscreen is for the skin they miss—same hierarchy as a cotton T-shirt that only covers what it covers.
  5. Recheck after water, sweat, or a towel. Those strip film. They do not add milligrams.

A thick coat of 30 still lets some UV through. Thickness only decides whether you were even close to 30.
